1. Goal of the Competition
The National Design Award of Latvia is a design award of national significance, the aim of which is to identify, evaluate, and internationally promote the most outstanding performance of Latvian designers, as well as promote the use of
Latvian design, development of the Latvian design industry, links with other
industries, and long-term growth.

2. Competition Organisers
The competition is organised by the Association “Latvian Designers’ Society” (hereinafter – the Organiser) in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia and SIA “Design Elevator”.

3. Competition Participants 
Works may be submitted for the competition by any author or any other person connected with the work, whether a private individual or legal entity
(municipalities, state institutions, non-governmental organisations, etc.).
If the same work is submitted more than once, a copy that was submitted first will be approved.
The same work can be submitted for several competition categories. Works created both in Latvia and elsewhere in the world can be submitted to the
competition, provided that the home country of the authors is Latvia or that they were living in Latvia at the time the design was developed.
All works must be available for inspection by the jury if required. Design works created during a study process can be submitted to the competition
by educational institutions in cooperation with the student(s), indicating in the application all persons involved in the creation of the work and their respective roles.
In case of doubt, during the evaluation of the submitted works, the organisers have a right to request to supplement the information provided with the works, both about the work itself as well as its author(s), including the description of the work, the authors’ professional activities, and the taxes paid in Latvia.

4. Competition Participation Fee
The competition is available for participants who have paid the competition participation fee. The participation fee for 1 (one) competition work in one
category depends on the submission date and is as follows:

From 01.12.2020 to 31.12.2020: EUR 50

From 01.01.2021 to 31.01.2021: EUR 60

From 01.02.2021 to 28.02.2021: EUR 70

The participation fee shall be paid on portal

5. Copyright
By submitting works for the competition and/or giving permission for their works to be submitted, the authors of the works are giving the Organiser and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia irrevocable, territorially unlimited, non-exclusive use rights (a simple license) that can be transferred to third persons for the purposes of providing information about the competition and advertising it to an extent corresponding to these goals.
The simple licence is issued to the Organiser and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia for as long as the respective works are protected in accordance with the Copyright Law. The author certifies and guarantees that he owns all rights awarded to the Organiser and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia, and that no restrictions exist in relation to their use.
The author certifies and guarantees that the work is his original work and that, by creating the work, the author has not knowingly violated the ntellectual property rights of any other persons. The author of the work is liable to any third party if the author’s work violates the intellectual property rights of this person. The Organiser is not liable for any damage caused to third parties that could arise from publishing a work submitted for the competition for the purposes of the competition. The applicant represents that the work submitted for the competition has been created using a properly licensed computer software, and that the author has acted in a manner whereby his conduct supports, promotes, and reflects the highest standards of design and professionalism, respecting equal competition rights and not infringing the copyrights of others. By submitting a work to the competition, the applicant agrees to further processing of the personal data submitted by the applicant, including publication and transfer thereof to third parties, identification of works and authors for accounting and bookkeeping purposes, as well as any other purposes related to the National Design Award of Latvia competition and in accordance with the Law.

6. Categories of the Competition
All works submitted to the competition shall be evaluated according to the criteria corresponding to each category.

1. Environmental and Interior Design (environmental objects, including environmental design objects; outdoor visual communication objects; environmental objects for promotions,
celebrations, public events; exposition and exhibition design; navigation design; private and public interior design; office interior design, etc.);

2. Product Design
(design of published products; design of customised products; unique design; redesign of existing products; furniture design; fashion design;
designs, etc.);

3. Graphic Design
(graphic identity design and redesign; graphic solutions for websites; publishing design (books, magazines, catalogues, corporate publications,
yearbooks, calendars, etc.); illustrations; packaging design, etc.);

4. Digital Design
(digital websites, including platforms, e-services, social networks; mobile applications; digital and mobile solutions, including 3D solutions; digital
and mobile game design, including 3D design; UI and UX solutions, etc.);

5. Service, Policy & Strategy Design
(design of social services, design of public services (state and municipalities), design of public utilities, design of state and municipality
policies, design of areas supervised by the state and municipalities, design of sectoral strategies, design of strategies of private companies, etc.).

According to the decision of the jury, the jury has a right to award an award for special achievements in the following categories:

1. Design for Society (a design with social impact).
2. Design Newcomer (excellent performance by young designers).
3. Outstanding Craftsmanship (a design work created in collaboration with artisans).
4. Other nomination: according to the jury’s evaluation.

7. Criteria for Assessment of the Works
The jury shall evaluate the submitted design works according to the following impact criteria:

1. Economic impact.
2. Innovation value.
3. Contextual relevance.
4. Design quality.

8. Submission of Works
The time frame for submitting the works is three months: from 12:00 on 1 December 2020 to 12:00 on 28 February 2021.
Works must be submitted by filling in the application form on the website. The online application form will be closed at 12:00
on the last day for the submission of works, i.e. 28 February. The submitted works must have been created during the last 3 (three) years, i.e.
from 1 January 2018 to 28 February 2021 (time of the submission of the application). The application form must specify precisely the textual and visual information to be submitted, and the technical parameters of the visual materials must be complied with. All information in the application form must be provided in 2 (two) languages, i.e. in Latvian and English. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in the submitted work’s not being evaluated. The applicant is responsible for the information provided in the application. 

Technical information.
Required information:

  • Category: the appropriate category shall be selected from the menu;
  • Author(s) of the work: name, surname;
  • Customer (preferably to be specified);
  • Design team members involved in the project (name, surname);
  • Phone number and e-mail of the Author (contact person), product or service website, or information on social networks,
  • Technical parameters of the work;
  • Description of the work, including a short description of materials and functions (up to 800 characters);
  • Payment details.

Images of the works must be submitted in *.jpg format of high quality, RGB colour model. Their size must be in A4 format (210mmx297mm), with a
resolution of 300 dpi (2480x3543px). Each image must be provided as a separate file, the quality of which is the responsibility of the applicant. The organisers of the competition reserve a right not to accept images of an especially low quality and not to display them for evaluation. The minimum number of images for describing the work: 3, providing that a complete insight into the essence of the work is given. 

9. The Jury

The composition of the jury for the 2021 competition will be announced publicly before the submission of the works to the competition. The jury consists of both Latvian and international experts in various fields of design. Each jury expert represents at least one of the above-mentioned competition categories. The work of the jury is chaired by the chairman of the jury.The jury adopts all decisions by a simple majority. If the votes of those present are divided equally, the vote of the jury expert of the specified category of the competition will be decisive.
The members of the jury must not in any way be related to the submitted works (incl. they must not be the authors, clients, or owners of the works, nor may they be co-workers of the author in the same firm or their family members).

10. Procedure for the Evaluation of Works
The evaluation of the competition works takes place in 3 (three) stages. During the first stage, the competition jury evaluates all the submitted works
electronically and selects the finalists – up to 20 works in total (up to 4 works of each category) that represent the goal of the competition according to the evaluation criteria.
During the second stage (final stage), 20 (twenty) nominees present their design work to the competition jury in a 3-minute video presentation. The video presentations must be prepared in advance and uploaded to YouTube, sending a link to the jury for further evaluation. The nominees will receive an invitation from the competition organisers to prepare their video presentations. As a result of the second stage, one 1 st  place winner is nominated in each category. During the third stage, the jury nominates one Grand Award winner among all of the 1 st  place winners. The works nominated for the final will be publicly announced on website , on social media, and other publicity materials, as well as exhibited in an exhibition of the works nominated for the final. After evaluating the finalists’ works, the jury decides on the distribution of the highest competition awards.
Each applicant has an opportunity to receive a jury’s appraisal of their work. The applicant shall indicate this in the application form.
The jury prepares a brief appraisal for each of the works nominated for the final. This appraisal will be publicly available on website
The jury has a right to decide on the nomination of fewer nominees for the final, if the works do not meet the above-mentioned criteria.

11. Announcement of the Results and the Exhibition of the Finalists’ Works 

The authors of the most outstanding Latvian design products and services will be honoured and awarded at the closing awards ceremony of the competition, which will take place on 28 May 2021. The works nominated for the final will be exhibited and publicly on view in an exhibition.

12. Awards
National Design Award of Latvia 2021, 1 st  place: 1 (one) work among the finalists in each category, if any, according to the jury decision.
Grand National Design Award of Latvia 2021: one work among the 1 st  place winners in each category. The jury may decide on the number of awards to be awarded, as well as decide not to award some of the awards.
The winner of the Grand National Design Award of Latvia 2021 will receive a cash prize from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia in the amount of EUR 2,000 (incl. taxes).
At the awards ceremony of the competition, the winners of the competition will be publicly announced, and the authors of the works nominated for the final of the competition will be awarded with finalist diplomas (to the nominees) and awards (to the 1 st  place winners) of the National Design Award of Latvia 2021.
