Fashion Collection «Melancholia X»
Brief description of the project
The fashion collection «Melancholia X» is the result of a creative collaboration between two generations — fashion designer Iveta Vecmane and her daughter Hanna Vecmane, a student at the Riga Design and Art School. This tandem brings a deeply personal atmosphere to the collection, where layers of time, culture, and emotion intertwine. The letter «X» in the title symbolizes both the unknown and the crossroads of opposites — good and evil, feminine and masculine, past and future. The collection poses questions, searches for answers, and invites the viewer on an emotional, aesthetic journey. The garments are handmade — featuring crochet, leather elements, and distinctive pleating techniques created using a historical machine from the 1930s, symbolically linking the present with Latvian craft heritage. Unique jewelry made from leather remnants has been developed in collaboration with artisans, affirming the collection’s commitment to sustainability. The collection experiments with the concept of unisex — silhouettes are intentionally deformed, thoughtfully balancing between classical forms and a contemporary, free expression of identity. It reveals a desire to rethink conventional genres and to create clothing as a tool of self-expression rather than restriction. Strands of hair braided into long plaits carry the experiences of generations, family stories, and shared emotions of the present. The mystical, ethereal figures embody a mood of melancholia — confusion, fragility, and uncertainty characteristic of today’s world. «Melancholia X» is not merely a fashion collection — it is an aesthetic and emotional exploration of what it means to feel in an era of constant change.
