Brief description of the project
Monk Echo is an innovative sound effects pedal that combines spatial reverb and delay with sonic qualities characteristic of the human voice or choir. Drawing inspiration from Baltic choral traditions and sacred acoustics, the music technology studio «Mentha Works» has created a device that routes the instrument’s signal through formant filters, imparting overtones characteristic of male or female voices. The pedal is built with top-quality audio processors and is intended for musicians and recording studio engineers, offering a broad sonic range — from clear, ethereal moods to dense, self-oscillating walls of sound. Monk Echo stands out for its intuitive user interface, visually striking LED display and a unique macro control system that lets the user change several sound parameters simultaneously with a single movement. The pedal is the result of a synergy of design and engineering, manufactured here in Latvia, with the first production batch already awaited by hundreds of users worldwide.
Originality and creativity of the idea
The originality of the project is rooted in an attempt to bring a human factor into digital sound processing, emulating monastic chant. Unlike traditional algorithms, the Monk Echo sound algorithm uses formant filters to model the resonances (vowels) of the human voice. Novelty is also expressed in the philosophy of the device: it abandons fixed algorithms in favour of an 'algorithm-free' approach, in which all sound-shaping tools are interconnected and continuously variable. The innovative macro control gives the pedal a new dimension, turning it into an interactive performance tool capable of fluidly changing several parameters simultaneously with a single hand movement, thereby able to respond to the dynamics of the musician's playing.
Definition of the problem and the relevance of the applied solutions
The category of the guitar pedal has been stagnant, offering conservative solutions with a binary 'on/off' logic that restricts musicians' creativity and disrupts fluid transitions during playing. Mentha Works set out to break this stereotype by creating a device that is not merely an effect but a fully fledged instrument.
The Monk Echo solution offers an innovative approach to shaping and controlling sound. The pedal combines the functions of reverb, delay, filter and musical distortion in a single compact housing, addressing the need for many separate devices. The intuitive 8×8 LED display provides immediate visual feedback, which is critical in live performance. The device is equipped with MIDI and an expression pedal, both critical control functions for a modern, well-equipped and considered guitar pedal, allowing anyone to shape their own unique sound. It is a new way of interacting, offering innovation in a category that has long lacked it.
Co-creation, stakeholder involvement and cooperation during the realisation process
Monk Echo was created in close cooperation between Mentha Works (Matīss Tazāns, Toms Lazdovskis), the engineering team and the studio Overpriced. Previous experience of cooperation and mutual trust enabled the team to successfully realise their first industrial product design. An outstanding result was achieved by all working as a single mechanism, seeking the best engineering, functional and visual solutions.
Specific technical experts and local manufacturers were involved in the process. A striking example of co-creation is the cooperation with the Latvian company Pluff Ltd, which developed unique controls specifically tailored to the design of this product. During the prototyping phase, design decisions were promptly validated by an international community of musicians, while the support of the LIAA Ideju kauss programme confirmed the product's export potential. The entire production chain was deliberately organised in Latvia, proving that local-scale co-creation can deliver an innovative and globally competitive high-technology product.
Functionality and technological solutions
Technologically, Monk Echo is a high-class stereo device with extensive connectivity (Stereo I/O, MIDI, Expression, USB-C). At the heart of its functionality is the macro control — a large knob developed specifically for this product that allows complex parameter combinations to be controlled with a single movement. The 8×8 LED display, unique in this product category, is an innovative navigational tool that visualises in real time the dynamics of sound modulation and parameter values, providing instant feedback.
The device's materiality is uncompromising — the durable metal housing is built 'like a tank' to guarantee longevity under intensive stage and touring use. The software supports 127 presets, ensuring studio-grade precision in live performance. The high technological capacity, combined with custom-developed parts and the LED display atypical for this industry, creates a new, intuitive interaction experience in the world of guitar effects.
Aesthetics and other experiential dimensions
The pedal's aesthetic is contemporary minimalism with a 'mystical' undertone, reflecting its name and the character of its sound. The design avoids bright colours and superfluous elements, focusing on a tactile experience and visual clarity. The dot-matrix display gives the device a retro-futurist air, while the housing's ergonomics and button placement are carefully planned for use both with the hands (on a desk) and as a robust element controlled by the musician on the ground with the foot, which is the most common mode of use. On an emotional level, Monk Echo offers an 'immersive' experience — its sound texture and visual feedback create a meditative environment for the creative process.
Economic significance, sustainability and circularity
Monk Echo is a high value-added export product (98% of market), which already at the pre-order stage, with 600+ orders, attests to the global capacity of Latvian design. Manufacturing is 100% localised, forming a strong local industrial chain in cooperation with Pluff Ltd, NA, Arco Color Latvia and Silmor. Such cooperation strengthens the local ecosystem and carries the name of Latvia worldwide.
At the heart of the project's sustainability is intelligent industrial design — a universal, modular housing framework has been developed that will serve as the basis for upcoming Mentha Works products as well. Such standardisation optimises resources, reduces manufacturing waste and ensures continuity of design. The durable metal and USB-C software updates guarantee a long product life cycle. Localised production not only minimises the logistics footprint but also serves as a model of sustainable and economically grounded product development.
Social relevance, inclusion, availability and accessibility
