Exhibition Courage and Care. Architecture and Design: The Roche
Brief description of the project
Through the example of one specific company, the exhibition allowed visitors to appreciate the power of creative thinking, the ability to make bold decisions, take responsibility, and address issues that are relevant and significant in today's society, including design and architecture. The exhibition invited visitors to think about how values become spatial, how to archive and notice them. The exhibition reminded us that any lasting investment must be sustainable, including from an aesthetic point of view. For the first time, the Latvian public was able to view unique materials stored in the Roche archives in Basel. The layout of the exhibition created a spatial dialogue between the modernist architects Aleksandrs Klinklāvs in Riga, Otto R. Zalvisberg in Basel, and the work of Roche's graphics department in the 20th century. Archival materials, photographs and design samples were arranged in a way that reveals tension, leaves room for interpretation, and stimulates thought. The spatial structure of the exhibition was symmetrically arranged around the central axis of the former St. George's Church. At the end of the axis, the original apse window, which had been uncovered, concluded the exhibition with a beam of falling light. Care was evident not only in the exhibition's theme but also in the use of resources — it was important for the designers to use as many existing materials as possible in the exhibition and to create ones that could be reused in other exhibitions. The modular metal «drawing boards» and stands, which form a link to modernist aesthetics, were designed to be easily dismantled and compactly stored.
