Brief description of the project

Wigiwama's mission is to help families create an environment that fosters creativity and good taste in children. "The Moon Chair" is a chair for children with a unique moon-shaped design. It is made up of three modules that make it easy to adapt to different body shapes or uses - for reading, playing, daydreaming or relaxing after a hectic day. The minimalist design, clean lines, pleasant fabric and sophisticated colour palette allow the Moon Chair to fit organically into any interior, be it a nursery or a designer living room. "The Moon Chair" is handcrafted in Wigiwama's production facility in Daugavpils. The chair is light, comfortable, durable and practical to maintain. Its removable and washable cover is available in nine colours and is made from OEKO-TEX and GRS-certified fabrics.

Originality and creativity of the idea

The Moon Chair’s innovative modular design offers a new approach to children’s furniture—adapting to the changing needs of modern families. It can be easily adjusted for sitting, relaxing, or reading, while also encouraging imaginative play. At the same time, its aesthetic design allows it to seamlessly blend into any environment or interior. The removable cover is made of durable, easy-care fabric that is machine washable. Both functional and visually appealing, the Moon Chair helps create a space where children can develop design thinking and a sense of good taste.

Definition of the problem and the relevance of the applied solutions

The designer’s task was to create a new children’s product with a unique, aesthetically appealing, and modern design that would also be multifunctional—intended for reading, relaxing, and play. In addition to looking good, the product also had to reflect Wigiwama’s mission. The innovative design of the Wigiwama Moon Chair helps create a pleasant, functional, and visually appealing environment for both children and parents. Its sustainable design, high-quality materials, and easy maintenance ensure that the Moon Chair becomes a long-lasting part of the home interior—adapting to the child’s age, needs, and interests while nurturing an appreciation for good design.

Co-creation, stakeholder involvement and cooperation during the realisation process

All stages of the Moon Chair’s design and production process take place in-house at Wigiwama—from concept development and prototyping to the final product. Each Moon Chair is carefully handcrafted at the company’s manufacturing facility in Daugavpils, Latvia.

Functionality and technological solutions

The Moon Chair is designed to provide comfort and support through different stages of a child’s development. Its design comprises three unique modules that can be combined for various functions—sitting, relaxing, reading, as well as imaginative play and games. The chair easily adjusts to the child’s height and age and is simple to move around. It is made from soft yet durable materials that are also easy to care for.

Aesthetics and other experiential dimensions

The Moon Chair’s clean lines and soft, muted fabric tones—available in nine different shades—blend effortlessly into any interior, creating a space that is not visually overwhelming. The soft, skin-friendly materials—OEKO-TEX® certified velvet, teddy, and terrazzo fabrics—offer a unique sensory experience. The Moon Chair’s aesthetic nurtures a child’s sense of taste and appreciation for quality design from an early age.

Economic significance, sustainability and circularity

The Wigiwama Moon Chair is created according to sustainable design principles. High-quality, durable materials help the chair retain its shape and comfort over time, while the removable, washable cover extends its life span. The fabrics used are OEKO-TEX® certified, and one of them—a GRS® certified velvet—is made from recycled PET bottles. The ISO-certified polyurethane foam is non-toxic and hypoallergenic. The Moon Chair is manufactured in Daugavpils through a short supply chain, helping to reduce CO₂ emissions from transport. Its packaging uses recyclable and biodegradable materials, and carbon-neutral GoGreen delivery is chosen whenever possible. Wigiwama also supports the Tree Nation initiative, donating €1 from every purchase on wigiwama.com to tree planting.

Social relevance, inclusion, availability and accessibility

The Moon Chair’s unique modular design allows it to be customized for any child—according to their abilities, interests, and needs. The high-quality materials are safe, certified, hypoallergenic, and free from harmful substances.
